The Festival is held each year on the Westbury Village Green over a March weekend close to St Patrick’s Day– this year the main Festival Day is on St Patrick's Day itself - Saturday 17th of March 2012.
In its current form the Festival has been running for a couple of decades or so – but St Patrick’s Day was first celebrated on the Westbury Village Green in the 1820’s when Irish political prisoners were banished to Tasmania and the Meander valley, and Irish soldiers were garrisoned in Westbury. At least 35% of Australian families have Irish roots, even more in Tasmania – and as part of the largest ethnic group in Australia the draw and affinity with this event is strong.
We have an active committee who are developing a program of music and entertainment that will appeal to a broader range of people. You will see from the planned events for 2012 that the Festival has something to please everyone, young and old |
