The Festival is held each year on the Westbury Village Green on the March weekend closest to St Patricks Day.
In its current form the Festival has been running for a couple of decades but St Patricks Day was first celebrated on the Westbury Village Green in the 1820s when Irish political prisoners were banished to Tasmania and the Meander Valley, and Irish soldiers were garrisoned in Westbury

At least 35% of Australian families have Irish roots, even more in Tasmania, and as part of the largest ethnic group in Australia the draw and affinity with this event is strong.
