In its current form the Festival has been running for a couple of decades or so but St Patricks Day was first celebrated on the Westbury Village Green in the 1820s when Irish political prisoners were banished to Tasmania and the Meander Valley, and Irish soldiers were garrisoned in Westbury.

At least 35% of Australian families have Irish roots, even more in Tasmania, and as part of the largest ethnic group in Australia the draw  and affinity with this event is strong.
